All this 'yes she is', 'no she isn't', doesn't portray the Tammy Duckworth for United States Senate campaign in the best light. Clearly...NOT the *worst* campaign rollout (ahem...Mike Frerichs), but not a good start for her campaign. Why would you give her dough when she can't even get this straight?
Rich Miller, over at CapitolFax, labels this fumbled campaign announcement 'somewhat odd' and we have to agree.
Duckworth, will be facing off against Senator Mark Kirk - who is seeking re-election. We'll be watching the Duckworth/Kirk race closely as we hope it will give us as much material as the Frerichs for Treasurer race ever did.

Senator Mark Kirk Adds Cyberbullying To His 'Suburban Agenda'
Earlier this month, US Senator Mark Kirk expanded his so-called 'Suburban Agenda' to include the heroin problem in Illinois, but this week he's taken his work online: he's trying to address 'cyberbullying'.
From his Senate Site:
In today’s society, almost half of all kids report having been bullied online. Cyberbullying wasn’t part of my childhood, but it is part of everybody’s now. Bullying has real and terrible consequences. In fact, a CDC study found that teenagers who have been involved in bullying are more likely to commit suicide than their peers. I am working with my Women’s Advisory Board and my Student Leadership Advisory Board to raise awareness about this horrific trend.Go check out his site for a ton of useful tools and to learn more about this problem here in Illinois.

Bob Dold Rolls Out Senator Mark Kirk Endorsement "As A Great Team"
There may be no more powerful voice to voters in the 10th Congressional District here in Illinois than from our US Senator Mark Kirk. After all, the voters in the 10th voted repeatedly to send him back to Congress to represent their interests.
That's why, it is so important to the Bob Dold for Congress campaign for Senator Kirk to come out so strongly not just *for* Dold, but importantly, *against* incumbent Congressman Brad Schneider.
Saying "Dold is like me", Mark Kirk says that he and Dold "Make a Great Team". Kirk also points out to voters that Schneider is "part of the problem in DC".
With the Kirk appearance and message, this spot will surely make voters all across the District pick up their eyes away from their phones and pay attention.

Senator Mark Kirk: Illinois Company's Product Can Slow Ebola
United States Senator Mark Kirk is out this morning with a really nice home-grown story about how an Illinois company called Isovac can be an easy, low-cost fix to prevent the spread of ebola.
Great to see Senator Kirk taking action and even better that there could be help on the way from some innovators here in Illinois at Isovac.
Great to see Senator Kirk taking action and even better that there could be help on the way from some innovators here in Illinois at Isovac.
More than 3,800 people in West Africa have died from Ebola, with the first death on American soil happening just this week in Dallas, Texas. According to the World Health Organization, more than a million people worldwide could be infected with Ebola by 2015. O'Hare is one of the top five airports for people traveling to the United States from Ebola-affected countries. If proper screening and containment measures are not in place, Ebola will continue to threaten the health and safety of Americans. `
This week, I met with representatives from Isovac, an Illinois company that manufactures a Patient Isolation Unit (PIU) to keep medical personnel and first responders safe from exposure to Ebola when assisting patients who have contracted the disease. Due to the infectious nature of the Ebola virus, those who are caring for infected individuals are at a high risk of contracting the illness through direct contact with mucous membranes or broken skin. Isovac's containment units will keep our medical personnel safe as they work to contain infected patients. And he's joining with his colleagues to the CDC, he's pushing them to act using this technology:
In a letter with Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.-16), Aaron Schock (R-Ill.-18), Rodney Davis (R-Ill.-13) and Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.-03), I urged the CDC to use these units so that the men and women willing to place themselves in harm's way to fight this deadly disease remain safe from infection.
Originally developed to protect U.S. troops from biochemical weapons in Iraq and Afghanistan, the PIU has since been shipped to members of the U.S. Air Force and NATO personnel stationed in the Azores Islands to preempt any type of patient evacuation or transport if the disease is contracted. Additional units have been sent to Scott Air Force Base for use by the 375th Air Mobility Wing. The chamber is fully equipped with an air filtration system, attached medical gloves and IV pouches. While in the PIU, the infected person is then completely contained and poses no threat to those caring for the individual en route to a medical center or hospital.
The chamber is FDA-cleared, and if deployed by the CDC, could be sent to medical personnel and airport security across the world to prevent further spread of the disease to those caring for ill patients.

Senator Mark Kirk Expands Suburban Agenda: Takes On Heroin
United States Senator Mark Kirk has been pushing his so-called "suburban agenda" for the past five or so years and it looks like he's expanding it to try to tackle the emerging problem of heroin in the suburbs.
He says that almost 400 people have died from heroin problems over the past three years. If you've been watching the moves of DuPage County elected officials, they've been moving on this problem for a bit now. DuPage Chairman Dan Cronin - along with Senator Kirk - is out in front of the heroin problem. Glad to see their leadership on the issue.
From his Senate site, he says that 'heroin is killing our suburbs'. He wants to nip this in the bud before it truly explodes and begins to erode our communities. We applaud Senator Mark Kirk for tackling this tough issue.

- Since 2012, heroin has taken a life every 3 days in Chicago’s suburbs. Though heroin is not often considered a serious concern for suburban parents, statistics show the epidemic is quickly growing.
- Heroin users frequently say the gateway to their drug addiction was taking a friend or relative's prescription drugs. In fact, nearly one-third of people aged 12 and over who used drugs for the first time in 2009 began by using a prescription drug recreationally. Enough prescription painkillers were prescribed in 2010 to medicate every adult American around-the-clock for a month.
- Opiods and Heroin are so highly addictive because the brain quickly develops a tolerance to the drug and requires higher and higher doses to achieve the same intensity. This frequently leads to overdoses.
- Cheaper than cigarettes and more accessible than alcohol, heroin has become a plague on our suburbs.

Candidate Facebook Weekend: Bost, Kirk, Cross, Rauner, Mendoza, Schock, Senger
It is Monday and that means one thing here on the Truth Team: A round-up of what politicians were up to this weekend as posted to their Facebook pages. Let's get after it:
Congressional candidate Mike Bost welcomed Congressman Mike Conaway to Pinckneyville to talk about agricultural issues.
US Senator Mark Kirk hit the campaign trail to support Tom Cross for Treasurer and Bruce Rauner for Illinois Governor. These are three guys that Republicans should be proud to be leading our party. They're focusing on the important stuff and things that we can win on: balanced budgets and cleaning up corruption.
Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza hung out with some of her strongest supporters in the 29th Ward and drank some purple soda. We prefer the orange Faygo, Susana! But...glad to see her out and about working hard to get re-elected.
Congressman Aaron Schock took some time away from his #Crossfit workout to to do something super important: honoring 'Central Illinois Gold Star Families'. Schock has been on a military kick lately and we're impressed to see him stand so strongly in support of our armed forces. Good on you, Congressman!
Congressional candidate Darlene Senger was out at the Plainfield Homecoming Parade and despite the 40-degree temperatures, she didn't wear any earmuffs. (But...we got reports from some folks that other candidates at the very same parade were rockin' Mike Frerichs' favorite headgear!)

Candidate Facebook Weekend: Bost, Davis, Senger, Kirk, Bansal, Simon, Duckworth, Unes
With 42 Days and 22 hours until the polls open, let's look around Illinois (Facebook) to see what the candidates were up to this weekend.
Starting with Congressional Candidate Mike Bost: He spoke at what looks like an outdoor Candidates Forum in Randolph County. He loves that blue shirt!
Congressman Rodney Davis played Emcee and introduced an actor playing President Abraham Lincoln. Look at that blue dress! Mary Todd never looked so fine!
Congressional candidate Darlene Senger hooked up with US Senator Mark Kirk and State Representative Candidate Krishna Bansal at the Indidan Cultural Festival.
Comptroller candidate Sheila Simon had tea with Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth in Elk Grove Village.
And State Representative Mike Unes had a big turnout for the Friendship Festival Parade in Canton.

Senator Mark Kirk Fundraising Off Michelle Obama Rumor
One of our readers sent us over this photo of a fundraising letter they received over the weekend from United States Senator Mark Kirk.
The Senator's team is using the 'rumor' of First Lady Michelle Obama possibly running for his US Senate Seat in 2016 as a fundraising device. And...a good one at that! He points out the similarities between what Michelle Obama has said to what was said about Hillary Clinton before she ran for US Senate from New York.
From the letter:
I'm not one to believe rumors or engage in political gossip, but when it comes to defending the Illinois Senate seat that I'm honored to hold, I take any and all potential threads seriously...all Illinois Republicans should.
While the press and rumor mills ponder the "will she or won't she?" question with regard to Michelle Obama...and the circumstances (and denials) are reminiscent of 1999 when First Lady Hillary Clinton was the subject of whirlwind speculation about a run for the United State Senate...we must build up my campaign so we can vigorously defend this seat -- no matter whose name is on the ballot on the Democrat side.

Candidate Facebook Weekend: Bruce Rauner, CD Davidsmeyer, Dick Durbin, Mark Kirk, Dan Rutherford
Monday mornings are the time for social media wrap-ups! Let's take a look at what some of the candidates and elected officials were up to this weekend around Illinois in our weekly feature: "Candidate Facebook Weekend".
First, Illinois Governor's candidate Bruce Rauner was out in Wheaton (home of his running mate!) and hung out with Lt. Dan.
Illinois State Representative CD Davidsmeyer was celebrating Scott County on 175 years.
And his fellow Senate-mate Mark Kirk not only ran into former Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner, but also hit a personal milestone: he walked across the Michigan Avenue Bridge. Good for you, Senator Kirk!
And...last but not least, we check in (as we always do) with Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford. For the second weekend in a row, he, umm...didn't do much. At least he didn't share it on Facebook.

Tio Hardiman Announces Run for 2016 US Senate Race in Illinois
In Illinois, we have a proud history of repeat candidates. The latest is Tio Hardiman who ran against Governor Pat Quinn in the Democrat primary this spring. Now, he's got his eyes on a larger prize: the United States Senate nomination in 2016.
WJBC has the details on Tio Hardiman's announcement:
Former Democratic candidate for governor Tio Hardiman of Hillside has formally announced he’ll be running for the U.S. Senate in 2016.
The primary for that race is still 20 months away, but Hardiman believes beginning the campaign now will give him an edge over other potential rivals.
"No one else is talking about running. Michelle Obama mentioned that she may run, but she decided she’s not going to run. I’m not sure if (Illinois Attorney General) Lisa Madigan is gonna run for U.S. Senate," Hardiman said, "so Tio Hardiman may be the only talk of the town when it comes down to running for the U.S. Senate against Mark Kirk right now."Our take?

What Does Joe Walsh Think Now? Mark Kirk To Stand With Jim Oberweis According to IR
We're thinking that Joe Walsh can come down off the ledge. (You'll recall that Joe Walsh proclaimed that Senator Mark Kirk 'announced' that he was no longer a Republican' a few weeks back).
Why? Well...because according to the Illinois Review, Senator Mark Kirk is saying that he's supporting the full Republican ticket. That seems to jive with what Jim Oberweis has been saying all along.
Much ado about nothing, right?
Here's how IR covers it. Notice the use of 'belatedly':
U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk has belatedly agreed to support fellow Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jim Oberweis.
In a brief statement on Tuesday, Kirk told Michael Calhoun of the Illinois Radio Network “I will be campaigning for Jim Oberweis.”
A month ago Kirk said he would not campaign for Oberweis, in order to protect his working relationship with Durbin. The announcement angered many Republicans and alienated conservatives who have been suspicious of Kirk's close relationship with Durbin.
To us there's a difference between supporting/campaigning 'for' someone vs. 'against' someone else. We're expecting that you'll see Senator Mark Kirk supporting the entire ticket, but not going out there and blasting Senator Durbin. Which...if I were Jim Oberweis, I'd be happy with. Mark Kirk isn't the attack dog needed in this case, in our eyes.
Back to Walsh...we're hoping that between his NYC gig and this news, he'll back off going after Kirk here. Mark Kirk - and now Bruce Rauner - are leading the ILGOP. They're the path forward.

Senator Mark Kirk Endorses Tom Cross for Treasurer
If you needed another reason to cast your vote today for Tom Cross - candidate for Illinois Treasurer - perhaps United States Senator Mark Kirk's endorsement will help make up your mind.
He came out and endorsed Tom Cross in the race yesterday.
From the Sun-Times:
U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., is backing Tom Cross in his bid for Treasurer.
Cross, the former Illinois House Republican minority leader, is going up against CPA Bob Grogan in Tuesday's primary.
..."As our next Treasurer, Tom will bring his experience as a reform-minded Republican to the office, working on solutions for Illinois taxpayers. Tom will enforce Illinois’ constitutional requirement of a balanced budget and create a Government Integrity Unit to crack down on fraud corruption."Get out and vote for Tom Cross for Illinois Treasurer today. He's our best hope to keep the office and to turn around Illinois.

Mark Kirk To Be Given Equality Illinois "Freedom Award"
As the issue of equal rights continues to (unfortunately) divide some in the Republican Party, there have been a few, vocal, leaders who have consistently been a voice for serving all the voters in Illinois.
Senator Mark Kirk is being honored this weekend for his commitment to equal rights and non-discrimination. When you really think about it, what is more important to our country than equal rights and non-discrimination? Shouldn't those be two issues that all politicians - and all Republicans - want to agree on for Americans and for Illinoisians?
Unfortunately for us here at the Truth Team, some in our party don't agree with us.
But, with Mark Kirk and folks like Judy Baar Topinka, Tom Cross, Ron Sandack, Ed Sullivan leading the way, we as a party won't die. Republicans wont' fade away. They won't let us. They want to keep the party flexible and bring in more people than we turn away.
Back to Kirk and the award from the Chicago Phoneix:
We are proud to call ourselves Republicans here at the Illinois Truth Team. It is because of folks like Mark Kirk that we're hopeful that we can grow the party and help change Illinois.

Back to Kirk and the award from the Chicago Phoneix:
Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois will be honored with the Equality Illinois Freedom Award at the LGBT organization’s annual gala on Feb. 8 at the Hilton Chicago, 720 S. Michigan Ave.
A recently retired Navy Reserve commander, North Shore congressman since 2000, and the state’s junior senator since 2010, Kirk will be honored for his contributions towards the betterment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender lives.
Equality Illinois executive Bernard Cherkasov calls Kirk a leader when it comes to the fight for LGBT equality.
“From his military service to his work in Congress, [Kirk] exemplifies the true meaning of being a public servant. He approaches LGBT issues not by the political labels that some people attach to them but by whether they are the right thing to do for Illinois and the United States,” he said
...Equality Illinois says Kirk has been an important voice in favor of the transgender-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act—passed by the Senate but now stalled in the House of Representatives. As the co-sponsor of the bill, Kirk made his first Senate floor speech since his return to argue for the passage of ENDA.
“I think it’s particularly appropriate for an Illinois Republican to speak on behalf of this measure in the true tradition of Everett McKinley Dirsken and Abraham Lincoln, men who gave us the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution,” he declared.
Most recently, Kirk refused permission for an anti-LGBT group to use a Senate meeting room.
“Sen. Kirk doesn’t affiliate with groups that discriminate,” his office said.
We are proud to call ourselves Republicans here at the Illinois Truth Team. It is because of folks like Mark Kirk that we're hopeful that we can grow the party and help change Illinois.

Mark Kirk Thinks "Speaker Peter Roskam" Has a Nice Ring to It
Our GOP Senator Mark Kirk told RollCall that he thinks Congressman Peter Roskam has what it takes to one day be Speaker of the House.
Besides Senator Kirk, there'd be at least one other big ILGOP booster: former Speaker Dennis Hastert. The Speaker is standing behind Roskam and even has asked Peter Roskam to sit in his spot. (his desk!). From a release:
Sen. Mark S. Kirk, R-Ill., who spent a decade in the House, said in a wide-ranging interview with CQ Roll Call that he believes Roskam has what it takes to lead the party.
“My hope would be, yes,” Kirk said, when asked if Roskam, the chief deputy whip, one day would be speaker. “I think Petey has a great career ahead of him. I thought when he got elevated to the position, with the normal churning of leadership, that someday Roskam could be speaker.”

Roskam with Speaker Hastert's Desk |
Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) released a web video today, first seen on Facebook, discussing a historic desk he recently received from former Speaker J. Dennis Hastert. The former Speaker recently sent his personal desk as Speaker to Roskam.
The desk has a long and distinguished history among Illinois Members of Congress. First used by Majority Whip Leslie Arends in the late 1940s, it was then passed down to then-Minority Leader Congressman Robert Michel in the 1980s, then in turn to Hastert.

Senator Mark Kirk Sitting out GOP Primary for Governor
Rich Miller at CapFax is reporting that Senator Mark Kirk is going to keep his powder dry in the 2014 GOP Primary for Governor. He's (kind of) lent one of his top folks to the Rauner Camp, according to Miller.
Kirk also had some advice to the candidates (we're thinking this advice is mostly aimed at Kirk Dillard, Dan Rutherford, and Bill Brady...). He basically said that we need to 'chill out' and be a bit more normal or else we won't win 'nuttin in 2014.

Republican Sen. Mark Kirk says he won’t endorse any candidate in Illinois’ GOP gubernatorial primary.
However, Kirk gave some advice. He contends the only way Republicans will take control of the governor’s mansion is to be moderate on social issues.
Kirk said that includes accepting same-sex marriage is legal in Illinois.Anyone going to take his advice?
